Despite being part of immensely successful video game franchises, the fictional realms depicted in Call of Duty and Minecraft are worlds apart. But that hasn’t stopped one developer from combining the military-themed action and aesthetic of Call of Duty with the voxel-style visuals of Minecraft in a new Android game appropriately named Block Ops.
As an article on DroidGamers reports, Block Ops is now available exclusively for Android smartphones and tablets -- with PC and iOS releases expected to come later down the line. The game’s creator Rory Harvey describes his first-person shooter as “a tongue-in-cheek, humorous parody of modern gaming in a destructible, block based world,” in which the player assumes the role of “a highly trained ‘Block Ops’ unit.”
While Block Ops exists primarily as a parody, its gameplay is surprisingly pretty polished. Its pixelized settings exhibit a considerable amount of detail, too. It's worth noting that this isn’t the developer’s first Android project. Harvey has created several other video game mashups including SpaceCraft (a satire of Minecraft and Starcraft). Though, none are perhaps as interesting as Block Ops.
You can check out the game for yourself on Google Play for $3.19.
