Mobile apps keep us entertained during those long morning commutes and help us avoid getting lost while traveling on the weekends. But there are a variety of Android apps for smartphones and tablets specifically designed to enhance your home television watching experience, too. The following is a look at several apps for TV viewers that are actually worth downloading.

AMC Mobile

By American Movie Classics LLC (Free)

Get it now on:

From engrossing drama hits like Madmen and Breaking Bad to gripping genre-flavored shows like The Walking Dead and Hell on Wheels, AMC has amassed a fantastic catalogue of programs no matter what kind of shows you enjoy. And AMC’s official app (which is available to download for free on Google Play for both Android smartphones and tablets) provides fans of those shows with some worthwhile extras including behind-the-scenes videos, character bios, episode guides, Twitter feeds and other content. And for Breaking Bad fans, the app’s "storysync" feature allows you to watch exclusive videos and partake in interactive polls and trivia when the show is premiering live.

Game of Thrones Companion

By BitSeries LLC ($3.99)

Designed for both HBO’s enormously popular fantasy series as well as George R.R. Martin's novels it's based on, the official companion app for Game of Thrones is a must-download for fans. As anyone who's either watched the show or read the books can attest to, the series features a profusion of hard to pronounce characters and fictional locales, which makes the app extremely helpful in refreshing yourself on its rich lore. The app even features the ability to adjust how many spoilers you’re exposed to in case you’re not fully caught up on the series. While the app costs $3.99, its robust features make this well worth the price for Game of Thrones enthusiasts.

XFINITY TV

By Comcast Interactive Media (Free)

Get it now on:

If you subscribe to XFINITY cable television, this free app has a number of features that make it worth a look. Arguably the most useful of these companion features is the ability to sync up the app with your DVR to schedule and record your favorite television shows. You can also keep track of when specific shows are airing through its local TV listing schedules and even turn your smart device into a remote control to flip through channels. And if you're away from home, the XFINITY TV Player app features a robust selection of shows for you to stream directly to your device. Other cable television providers like Direct TV have very similar apps available on Google Play, too.

Sons of Anarchy Android App

By Fox Digital Entertainment, Inc (Free)

Get it now on:

While it has yet to be updated in anticipation of the forthcoming fifth season of FX’s gritty biker drama, Sons of Anarchy, this official app is one of the better executed companion apps designed around a popular TV show. Last season’s version of the SOA app featured a bevy of bonus content including deleted scenes, storyboards showing how episodes are pieced together, and even 100% original scenes shot exclusively for the app. While nothing has been confirmed thus far, we’re hoping that FX starts supporting its fantastic Sons of Anarchy app for season five, which premieres on September 11.

GetGlue

By AdaptiveBlue (Free)

Get it now on:

If you’re going to download any of the Android apps discussed in this story, you should give serious consideration to checking out AdaptiveBlue’s GetGlue. The popular app allows you to “check-in” to all of the TV shows you’re currently watching and share and compare your watch lists with friends on GetGlue. The ability to chat with friends as shows are airing live -- and getting personalized recommendations of stuff you should be watching -- are reasons enough to download this onto your Android device.

Netflix

By Netflix, Inc (Free)

Get it now on:

Chances are you’ve probably already heard about something called Netflix. But did you know that its free app for subscribers includes virtually all of the features and navigation options as Netflix viewed through your PC or Blu-ray player, allowing you to stream thousands of TV shows and films from its sizeable watch it now selection? Perhaps the other biggest reason to download the official Netflix app is that it completely syncs up with your account, allowing you to do things like watch part of a TV show at home on your big screen TV, and then resume your show later on your smart device (or work computer).
