Columbia Pictures has released their first trailer for the upcoming sci-fi film After Earth, a project starring the father-son duo of Will Smith and Jaden Smith. As the title implies, the movie takes place far into the future, although the planet looks as old as ever.
In the opener, we see a lone spacecraft trapped in an asteroid field, subsequently becoming so damaged that it crash-lands onto a quarantined future Earth.
That's problematic, because this Earth is one where most animal species have been evolving to become stronger and smarter than ever as a counter-evolution to combat the human race.
Will Smith's character, veteran soldier Cypher, is injured during the course of the film, leaving his estranged son Kitai to recover their rescue beacon by any means possible. That deadly challenge will be their only way of getting off the planet, although the young Kitai is entirely unfamiliar with the dangerous world.
Currently, the film is expected to hit theaters in June 2013, with a two-day lead premiere in France.
After Earth, once known as A.E. 1000, is directed by M. Night Shyamalan, the prolific director behind The Last Airbender and The Happening. Book of Eli writer Gary Whitta wrote the original story, although it was notably edited by Shyamalan and Academy Award winner Stephen Gaghan (Traffic, Syriana).
