Ridley Scott’s prequel to his landmark 1979 science-fiction film, Alien, makes its worldwide debut on Blu-ray and DVD on October 9, 2012. And while Prometheus wasn't exactly met with universal praise when it hit theaters last June, its home release boasts a number of genuinely intriguing features that go beyond your average Blu-ray/DVD release -- even if you weren't blown away by it the first time. The following is a look at why we’re looking forward to checking out Prometheus on video -- and why you might want to, too.
Prometheus’ Plentiful Plot Holes Will (Probably) Be Filled
One of the most common criticisms of Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is that the film is riddled with huge leaps of logic and plot contrivances that are impossible to ignore. Just do a quick Google search and you’ll discover that its unexplained moments are well-documented on the Internet by reviewers and hardcore Alien fans.
Luckily for its critics, it looks as though an honest effort has been made to address some of those story issues if the recent ad campaigns for Prometheus’ home release are to be believed. Big, bold text that appears during the Blu-ray commercial promises that “questions will be answered.” Specifically, we're supposed to learn things like why the hostile alien species was created in the first place and how certain events depicted in Prometheus tie into the original Alien film. In total, Prometheus on Blu-ray and DVD is packed with over seven hours of additional interviews and footage.
A Great Showcase for Your 3D TV
While Prometheus may not win any awards for its masterful screenwriting, there’s no denying that the movie itself is a feast for the senses if you are willing to turn your brain off for certain moments. From the imaginatively conceived planet of LV-223 to the extraterrestrial abominations that inhabit it, Prometheus has no shortage of moments that are just stunning to take in. And the Blu-ray 3D version makes its spectacular special effects shine even more. It's the perfect kind of experience for a movie night with your friends and 3D-enabled TV.
Second Screen Content on Your Android Tablet
Tablets play an increasingly larger role in our lives not only for their convenience and portability, but also by allowing us to interact with other media including TVs and videos games through second screen applications.
Prometheus on Blu-ray allows you to sync your Android tablet up with the movie and get access to the fictional Weyland Corporation’s archives. Now available as a free download on Google Play, the official Prometheus Weyland app provides you with a profusion of behind-the scenes content like screen tests, creature designs, concept art and more. Fox also released a video that provides a complete rundown of what you can do with the second screen app.
New Ending And Beginning
Alternate endings are frequently used to entice people to purchase a film on Blu-ray or DVD. But alternate openings are almost unheard of. And Prometheus’ opening moments in particular present some of the film's biggest questions about its overall universe. It'll be interesting to see how the new beginning to the movie introduces us to Prometheus' sci-fi world and if it subsequently sheds any more light on what exactly the characters in the original opening were doing...
