Despite competition from multi-million dollar blockbuster video games like Mass Effect 3, Borderlands 2 and Far Cry 3, Telltale Games' ambitious adventure title has proven to be one of 2012's best works.
Metacritic, a reviews score aggregation website managed by CBS Interactive, recently published their list of last year's top games, gathered from a calculated average of critical feedback from several gaming publications.
By Metacritic's own in-house metrics, here's where everything else fell on the list, with Walking Dead impressively snagging the top spot over plenty of other "Game of the Year" contenders:
- The Walking Dead: The Game (95)
- Persona 4 Golden Edition (94)
- Mass Effect 3 (93)
- Journey (92)
- Xenoblade Chronicles (92)
- Dishonored (91)
- Mark of the Ninja (91)
- Borderlands 2 (91)
- Far Cry 3 - PS3 (91), Xbox 360 (90)
- Trials Evolution (90)
At first, The Walking Dead seemed like an odd selection as one of the industry's best pieces of work due to its episodic content and limited interactivity.
However, that didn't seem to limit the game in the slightest. Despite the staggered release schedule, each of the five episodes sold millions of digital copies on various platforms including PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, with a physical retail version released this past Decemeber.
