When helpful robots decide that they might like to exterminate humans, it’s time to send them to the scrap heap.

There’s a new game on its way from Epic Games, developers of Unreal Tournament, the original Gears of War titles, and the wildly popular Unreal game development engine. Interestingly, Robo Recall is being developed not for consoles and PC, but instead will offer a virtual reality experience on the Oculus Rift. It is currently in development and is expected to arrive as a free download in early 2017.
Announced at the Oculus Connect 3 event, Robo Recall is described by its publisher as “an action-packed virtual reality first-person shooter with gratifying gameplay and an in-depth scoring system.” Your enemies are robots gone haywire, and you’ll get to blast them with a wide variety of weapons as you explore urban environments and access special challenges.
Epic Games also shared a trailer at the announcement, which we’ve embedded here. It offers a first glimpse at the promising title, which introduces the TAL 09 series of robots. Originally developed to “serve” humans, they’re now on a rampage (sort of like the robot masters in the classic Mega Man titles) and it’s your job to “recall” them. The game’s title makes sense now.
The trailer, at least, showcases a clever sense of humor, and the visuals are certainly on point (as one might well expect from the developer). If you’re looking for something cool to play on your Oculus Rift, this should be one game to watch closely, especially since it will be available free and looks like it may provide a more compelling experience than some so-called premium titles.
